Sydney Mad Dash – London Symphony Orchestra
*** SOLD OUT *** Come join Lesley & Rob’s small group Mad Dash to Sydney and your bloke is welcome to join. Enjoy a night at Sydney’s Opera House experiencing London’s Symphony Orchestra playing Mahler 7 – Music of the Night conducted by Sir Simon Rattle. Tuesday night starts with dinner and drinks Sydney’s Opera House followed by enjoying the concert seated in the Circle.
During the day, it’s your own time – maybe spend time shopping at the newly opened Ralph Lauren Emblematic multi-level store in Pitt Street, perhaps indulge in a little retail therapy at Tiffany, enjoying a glass of bubbles while you shop or simple take in a bit of sightseeing.
At night you’ll dine at some beautiful Sydney restaurants, places Lesley & Rob would love to share with you: Sydney Opera House’s Portside and Ripples Restaurant. Maybe during the day, enjoy the ferry out to Manly and enjoy fish & chips while sitting on Manly beach.
About Marler’s Seventh – Music of the Night
Mahler’s Seventh is the dark horse of his symphonies. It doesn’t turn up in orchestra programs quite as often as it should, but when it does, this fascinating work intrigues and delights every time. No wonder it has become a signature work for Sir Simon Rattle.
The heart of this symphony is ‘music of the night’, with Mahler taking inspiration from Mozart serenades and lovers singing below windows (there’s even a guitar and a mandolin). He sets up a curious, nocturnal atmosphere with music that scurries through the shadows of a kaleidoscopic dreamworld. Is he being ironic or should we take him seriously? It’s Mahler, so it’s complicated. And it’s that ambivalence that makes this symphony seem so modern.
Mahler Seven, says Sir Simon, follows a ‘journey from night to an almost blinding dawn’. Spend the night with Mahler and the LSO and you too can take that sonic and emotional journey.
